Choose the size of the printed image first. Check how your file fits that shape and whether it has enough resolution for the size you want. If you add a paper border, the final sheet will be larger than the image size.
Start with the image's shape
The same file can fit one size with little cropping and another size with a noticeable crop. A 3:2 image, for example, matches 8 × 12 more closely than 8 × 10. Choose a size that suits your display goal, then inspect the crop preview before deciding.
If you already have a frame or mat, measure its opening. The outer frame dimensions are not the printed image dimensions. See the print size and border guide for a fuller explanation.
Check the file's resolution
After you select an image, the order builder shows resolution guidance on the size choices. It may warn that a larger size could look soft or block a size when the file does not have enough pixels. A tight crop can lower the usable resolution, so check the selected crop too.
For planning, 300 PPI at the final image size is ideal when possible. The Stackhouse size guide lists 150 PPI as its minimum recommendation, but the builder's guidance for your actual file and product is the check to use before ordering. Read How to Check Your Image Resolution if you need help finding your pixel dimensions.
Image size and final paper size
On paper prints, the selected image size is the printed artwork area. A border adds unprinted paper outside it. An 8 × 10 image with a 1-inch border on every side has a 10 × 12 final paper size. See How to Use Borders in Your Prints.
Before checkout
- Choose a size that fits your frame, wall, or customer order.
- Inspect the crop for missing edge details. Adjust it or try a different size if needed.
- Read the selected size's resolution guidance.
- Check the final dimensions if you add a border.
If you need dimensions that are not listed, see Custom Sizes and Non-Standard Dimensions. If you are unsure what size your file supports, contact us before ordering with the product, desired size, and file dimensions.
