When you’re setting your preferences for a new print, you’ll be given the option to add a border around your image. But what exactly are the benefits of adding a border to a print, and when is it appropriate to add one?
When to Use a Border on a Print
Deciding whether to add a border to a print primarily depends on how you want the print to be displayed.
If you want to frame your print without cutting off any part of the artwork, adding a border allows you to fit the entire image inside the visible part of the frame while making sure the print can be properly secured inside the frame.
You can also add a border to a print to give the illusion of matting without adding a mat.
Available Border Options
We offer three border options for prints:
- Borderless
- ¼-inch border
- 1-inch border
FAQs
Which border option is right for my print?
To determine how much of a border to add, it’s best to know how you plan on displaying your print.
As a general rule, the larger the border, the more wiggle room you have for framing and matting without cropping the image, but the more likely you will see some of it.
Here are some suggestions based on your final framing style:
Framing (with mat): ¼-inch or 1”
Framing (without mat): Borderless, ¼-inch, or 1”
Mounting, no frame: Borderless
Can I get a larger border?
If you want a larger border around your image than we offer, you can create a border around your image file in Photoshop, Illustrator, or InDesign.
