Unwrapping a rolled print correctly is essential to avoid damaging the artwork. Follow these simple steps to safely unwrap your print:
Materials You’ll Need:
•Clean, flat workspace
•Pair of scissors or a utility knife (optional)
•Weights or flat objects (e.g., books) to help flatten the print
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1.Prepare Your Workspace
•Choose a clean, dry, and flat surface that’s free from dust and debris.
•Wash and dry your hands to avoid transferring oils or dirt onto the print.
2.Carefully Remove Packaging
•If the print is in a tube, gently remove the cap or tape from the ends.
•Slide the print out slowly, ensuring it doesn’t rub against the edges of the tube.
•If the print is wrapped in protective paper (like glassine or kraft paper), unroll it gently without tugging.
3.Unroll Gradually
•Place the print face up on your workspace.
•Allow the print to naturally begin flattening on its own. Avoid forcing it flat, as this can cause creases or cracks in the ink.
4.Use Weights for Flattening
•Place clean, smooth objects (like books with soft covers or clean paper underneath) along the edges of the print.
•Leave the weights in place for a few hours or overnight, depending on how tightly the print was rolled.
5.Avoid Direct Pressure on the Artwork
•If weights are necessary, ensure they don’t touch the printed surface directly. Use the protective paper that came with the print or place a clean sheet of paper over it as a barrier.
6.Frame or Store
•Once the print is flat, either frame it immediately or store it flat in a protective sleeve or portfolio case.
Additional Tips:
•Do not roll the print in the opposite direction to flatten it, as this can damage the material or crack the print surface.
•Keep the print away from direct sunlight, high humidity, or heat sources while unwrapping and flattening.
